Whitevale Successfully Defends EZ GO Hulbert Memorial Championship
(Woodbridge, Ont., October 5, 2009) – Whitevale Golf & Country Club successfully defended their Hulbert Memorial Championship today at The Country Club. The team led by Canadian PGA Head Professional Tony Wilkins and included amateurs Mark Brewer, Jim McGilton and Barry Catterall shot 15-under-par 56 to clinch the overall title.
“It was a total team effort today,” said Wilkins’ “We made eight straight birdies out of the gate and that really got our wheels turning and we made some bombs on the greens, overall it was a great day,” added Wilkins.
Although the Whitevale team defended the title they did do it with a new member in Jim McGilton. McGilton and the Whitevale team become the seventh team in the 56 year history of the Hulbert Memorial Championship to win back to back titles.
Other notable scores from The Country Club included a 13-under-par for The National Golf Club of Canada as well as Barrie Country Club. Dundas Valley finished one shot behind Barrie in west division while Glendale finished 3 shots back of The National in the east division.
The Hulbert Memorial Championship began in 1946 after the name sake Arthur Hulbert. Arthur Hulbert was the Head Professional at Thornhill Golf & Country Club from 1924 until 1945 when he died very suddenly and left his family in dire straits. The members of Thornhill and his fellow professionals banded together and held a Pro-Am to raise some money to help out his immediate family, thus, the birth of the Hulbert Memorial Fund which today is the Ontario PGA Benevolent Fund. The purpose of the Benevolent Fund is to assist the families of Canadian PGA Professionals' in Ontario who struggle through illness, death or other catastrophic occurrences where assistance is required.
The Hulbert Memorial Championship is just one of the ways the benevolent fund receives support. Through continued support from many of the provinces golf courses the Hulbert Fund has successfully been helping Canadian PGA Professionals' and their families since 1946.
